Have you just been asked to be your sister's/cousin's/friend's maid of honor? If the answer is yes, there are a few things I'd like to say to you...

Be supportive

Your bride is experiencing a wide range of emotions right now. It's your job to keep her grounded...be her voice of reason from time to time. You may find yourself as the deciding vote on many issues throughout the planning. If that isn't something you know how to do, then learn...if it's something you don't feel comfortable doing, then get over it and learn how to swallow your pride. She's asked you to take this ride with her and is counting on you to help her navigate all the madness coming her way.

Be On Time

If you are generally late for all your appointments, get an alarm clock! Get your measurements to the bridal shop before the due date and encourage the bridesmaids to do the same. Beat her to every appointment...show up at her house before she's finished getting ready. Your reassuring face should be there for her each and every time.

Take her out for a Girls Nite Out

The pressure will be difficult to handle every now and then while your bride is planning her wedding...anyone who tells you that they will eliminate ALL the stress is blowing smoke. Be sure to take her out to a favorite hot spot or to her favorite nail place to recharge and rejuvenate her. She will love you for it!

Blog Remix: When Things Go Wrong On Your Wedding Day

Let's face facts...There are things that are bound to go wrong on your wedding day. No one is perfect and wires get crossed because of how people interpret OR don't interpret things. We are all unique creatures and we don't always see things the same way that others do.

But...

You CAN avoid blips in your wedding day festivities if you follow a few simple steps. Of course hiring a wedding planner like me, ensures that you won't be dealing with those mishaps. I'm not suggesting that things will go wrong if you don't hire a wedding planner; I'm simply saying that having one allows you to enjoy your celebration without dealing with the photographer that didn't show up or the wedding cake that's falling over like the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

That said, here is some advice, courtesy of the folks over at WeddingChannel.com, on how to "Avoid" and "Cope" with disasters that may happen on your wedding day.

How To Deal With Wedding Disasters

Don’t worry – those nightmares you’re having about your wedding going wrong are perfectly normal. While it’s impossible to predict everything that might go awry on your wedding day, you can take steps to prevent some of the most-common major upsets ahead of time. So, check out our tips on avoiding wedding disasters, and dealing with them head-on if they can’t be avoided... and start sleeping better at night.

DISASTER: Somebody spills something on your wedding gown before the ceremony.
AVOID IT: Ban anything colorful like juice, wine, or dark lipstick from any room you’ll be in while wearing the dress.
COPE WITH IT: White out the stain as much as you can with chalk, and remind yourself all eyes will be on you, not your gown.

DISASTER: It’s raining and your ceremony will take place outdoors.
AVOID IT: Have a back-up plan already in place.
COPE WITH IT: If the venue doesn’t have an indoor space available, get your wedding party to start calling tent companies in case a vendor can accommodate you at the last minute. If this doesn’t work, send your groomsmen out to buy dozens of umbrellas (preferably in white).

DISASTER: Your ring bearer or flower girl refuses to march down the aisle.
AVOID IT: Do several walk-throughs at the rehearsal until they’re comfortable with the routine.
COPE WITH IT: Have the child’s mother stand discreetly at the end of the aisle – preferably with candy -- and tell him or her all he has to do is walk straight to her.

DISASTER: The best man forgot the rings.
AVOID IT: Bring the rings yourself and hand them over to him before the ceremony starts.
COPE WITH IT: Do the ring exchange with your parents’ rings; you can have your permanent rings blessed by the officiant later if that’s important to you.

DISASTER: Your guests exceed the final guest count by about 10 people, so you’re short on food and space at the reception.
AVOID IT: Contact people via telephone who haven’t RSVP’d two weeks before the wedding (feel free to pawn this task off on members of the wedding party, your mom, etc.), and then pad your final guest count by five people.
COPE WITH IT: Tell your catering manager and/or venue manager about the problem and ask them to arrange seating either by squeezing extra chairs around existing tables, or slipping extra guests into a cocktail area where they can munch on appetizers (and vow to each other that they’ll never again neglect to RSVP).

DISASTER: Your band or DJ doesn’t show up.
AVOID IT: Confirm all dates and times the week before the wedding with every vendor you’ve hired, and have a list of contact numbers with you.
COPE WITH IT: Hook an iPod or MP3 player up to the stereo system, and let the dancing begin.

DISASTER: The wedding cake melts, falls to the floor, or never shows up.
AVOID IT: Confirm in advance there is a cool place to store a butter cream cake to avoid a meltdown, and go over transportation, set-up, and back-up plans with the cake designer.
COPE WITH IT: Call local bakeries to see if one will let you ‘borrow’ a wedding cake for photos, and then slice up a sheet cake behind closed doors to serve to guests. If you can’t swing that, send someone out for cupcakes, and act like that was the plan all along (cupcakes are nowadays very fashionable at weddings).

Whatever happens, keep in mind that even if the details may not go as planned, if you carry it off well, the guests often don’t know the difference. And above all else, remember what’s really important – if you are married at the end of the day, the wedding was a success!

Tips On Choosing Your Wedding Colors

Use your favorite color paired with your honey's favorite color. If they seem to clash, choose complimenting hues. Believe me...it CAN work!

Visit a fabric store.

The major hardware stores have LOTS of paint chips.

Choose a few favorite elements and pull your colors from them. A favorite glass, piece of jewelry or even a bicycle. (I've seen it done!)

Choose a favorite picture; preferably non wedding related...and pull the colors from there

Consider your venue's color scheme before you make the final decision on colors. Navy blue and gold carpet paired with pink and purple table linens might clash. A good designer can jazz the decor up so that no one notices, however more than likely, it will be hard on the eyes.

Purple Pumps On Your Wedding Day?

I would! I'd love to get married all over again just so I could wear them and take pictures while letting them peek out from under my dress. (Love that shot!)

What do you think about this trend? It's been around for awhile but I'm just starting to embrace it. I couldn't let go of the perfect white pumps for the wedding day. Now? I think the all white shoe is slowly making its way out.

There are still plenty of chic styles in white to choose from...but a burst of color?

Yummy Chocolates!

The holidays always leave me with tons of sweets! I am a chocolate lover; die hard dark chocolate lover to be exact...and this year I stumbled upon a brand new favorite.

Of course there signature Pure Dark flavor is my favorite but they have so many other decadent morsels. I also tried the Earl Grey which reminded me of a warm cup of tea. I think these chocolates would be a great gift basket or favor item for your wedding guests, or a nice addition to some champagne to share with your sweetie on those quiet, intimate nights...don't you?

I stopped at two pieces...must not over do it on the first day of the new year!!

See? Plenty left to share with hubby and daughter!

Not at all. It's all about HOW you ask them. Learn about them and how they do business. Some wedding planners have specific instructions on how they handle intern requests. Always adhere to them and be sure to remain professional at all times. Don't stalk them...that's a big turnoff. Try getting to know them by attending networking events in your area first. Remember the "know, like and trust" rule. No one will work with you or recommend you to others unless they know, like and trust you...right?

do you keep a wedding binder for each wedding you do? what do you put in it?

I sure do! There are three main sections...contracts, planning checklists and production.

Each couple's binder has a checklist (one for me and for them), contracts, mockup pics, timelines, swatches, contact info for all bridal party members, etc., etc., etc., all filed in the appropriate main section. On the wedding day if needed, I have every piece of paper produced throughout the planning. Most of the time, I only need the timeline to run the day of logistics, but its good to know I have my binder, just in case!

What is the best way to track RSVP's for your client's wedding?

RSVP's can be tracked with a system that is as simple or as complexed as you care to handle. Depending on your "techie" tolerance, I recommend using a system that is both efficient and comfortable for YOU! Me? I'm a computer geek so I prefer to do it using a software program that keeps track of all my client's information, including billing, vendor preferences, timelines, etc. It's called iDO and it's owned and distributed by Elm Software.

The software has an invitation utility as well as a way to track RSVP's. The website has a great little tour online...check it out!

Are you having trouble deciding which music selections to include on your play list for your band or DJ? Why not let your guests decide?

I've worked with many couples who struggle with what to play at their wedding receptions to ensure that everyone has a chance to dance and enjoy the party. Some don't choose a play list at all. If they don't hire a wedding planner to plan their wedding :) and end up with musical entertainment that doesn't know how to "read" a crowd or has outdated selections, the music ends up being a disaster because the younger crowd can't get into the oldies and the older crowd can't stand hip hop.

I often tell my couples to ask their guests to send in their favorite tunes before the wedding. They can include a line on their RSVP card or as a form on their wedding website. This way they can give the list to their entertainment vendor beforehand to make sure they have all the tunes for their wedding day.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with one of the most detail oriented DJ's this side of wedding heaven! His name is Scott Favor and his company is called The Party Favers. Scott gets to know his couples. He cares about you and your wedding reception. He asks LOTS of questions to make sure he does exactly what you want on your wedding day. After one meeting with Scott, I can tell that he's funny, professional and will bend over backwards to help you plan a fabulous reception.

We discovered we have a lot in common as wedding vendors because we know "where the wedding is"...it's wherever the bride and groom are! I can't wait to work with him! Take a look at Scott's website and let me know what you think.

Shall We Dance?

I remember the dance I had with my dad when I got married in 2004. We danced to Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father. I was a teary eyed MESS! But it is one of the most memorable moments in my life. My dad passed away in September of last year and I am so thankful that he was able to meet my wonderful husband and have peace of mind that I was in good hands!

These shots are of Micaela and her dad dancing in front of 300 family and friends last June. With that many pairs of eyes on him, you would think that he would have been a bit shy. Not this dapper dude! He wasn't shy about it at all and as you can see, he even wowed us by giving Micaela a little twirl. They had so much fun with it. It was a very touching and special moment for them both.

Make sure you honor your dad or favorite father figure with a special song to dance to. That moment will live in your heart forever.

Rehearsal Dinner Site

Recently I spent the evening with the wonderful staff at J&G Steakhouse which sits atop the regal Phoenician resort in Scottsdale Arizona. Imre Cupani, the Director of PR and Special Projects was my hostess for the evening and we had a wonderful time getting to know each other and how we can partner together to offer our bridal couples a wonderful wedding event experience.

Owned by one of the world's most famous chefs, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the J&G Steakhouse has everything you need for a relaxing and fun dinner with family and friends. Chef Jean-Georges is also a "savvy businessman and formidable restaurateur and is responsible for the operation and success of a constellation of three and four star restaurants in the United States, United Kingdom and Shanghai."

After the tour to entertain my eyes, we sat down to a lovely feast to entertain my palate. I had the Peekytoe Crab Cake, Remoulade and Herb Salad for an appetizer; the Slowly Cooked Salmon Rubbed with Lemon Oil and Paprika (It was heavenly!) and for dessert, I tasted the Mini Cheesecake with Sour Cherries (best cheesecake I've had since leaving the east coast) and the Lemon Vanilla Creme Brulee, which was equally delicious!

Breathtaking views, a superb menu and such a gracious and polite staff are just a few of the perks found at J&G Steakhouse...perfect for a rehearsal dinner or any other intimate wedding event.

Do I Really Need a Wedding Planner?

A few weeks ago, I had a roundtable discussion with a few other planners about whether or not every bride needs a wedding planner. Once we got through the discussion about affordability, we decided to concentrate on needs. I've read many blog posts on this subject before but I feel its a subject worth revisiting.

There are valuable benefits in most, if not all situations to having a wedding planner. Couples today have demanding careers with complicated schedules and on top of that, many more choices in choosing the dynamics of their wedding day. Gone are the days of cake and punch in church social halls!

Hiring a good, reputable planner means hiring someone to handle all of the things you can't or don't have the expertise for. Plus, she'll make sure you get that well deserved face time with your groom on your wedding day...instead of you having to dealing with the waitstaff that is moving a bit too slow with dinner.

Here are some situations where hiring a planner is necessary:

Off Site Weddings - Incudes weddings at home, or at any site that needs to be transformed into an event space. Most couples and their families don't know the massive laundry list of things needed for an off site event. Rentals, tents, parking, catering needs, restroom needs...and more.

Complicated Family Situations - Do you or your groom have serious food allergies? A mother of the bride that refuses to walk down the aisle without granny's hankie that she left in the dressing room? How about a relative who insists on sitting at the guest table reserved for more immediate family members? Having a point person for family and friends to go to for information and referee duties is priceless! (Oh the stories I have!)

Destination Wedding - Simple...you don't know anything about the local venues or vendors, the laws of the destination city nor the specific logistics of moving around in that city. Ever heard the expression, "You don't know what you don't know"? Hiring a planner is a no brainer.

Large Weddings - Self explanatory...more people means more work.

Organization doesn't come easily to you - Good planners are organizational wizards. You hire professionals to do other things you aren't the best at...organizing and lists make you crazy? Hire a planner.

Honey for My Honey!

My husband is always telling folks about how being married to me is like living in a fine restaurant! I'm humbled and appreciative that he loves my cooking so much but I can't take all the credit. When it comes to planning meals or thinking about what to cook next, I sometimes draw a blank despite my collection of recipes. He, on the other hand, can find some of the best, easy to make, great tasting recipes I have ever tried.

Here is one that he recommended and one he really enjoys! I like to serve this chicken with yummy wild rice and fresh brussel sprouts with a light butter sauce...YUM!!

1 3 lb chicken, cut into pieces
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup Inglehoffer Stone Ground Mustard (or any Dijon mustard...I prefer the stone ground for those little bits of flavor!)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

-Preheat oven to 350º.
-Place chicken pieces in a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish
-In a medium size bowl, combine butter, honey, mustard, salt and pepper.
-Mix well with a whisk to combine all flavors and then spread over chicken.
-Bake, 1 hour, basting with pan juices every 15 minutes, until chicken is tender and golden brown.

Don't You Just Love Peach Cobbler?

Back in the day, holiday dinners were one big production. Everyone in our extended family was within an hour's drive to Stamford and each holiday, the family gathering rotated between my Aunt Rose's house and our house. There were more than 20 of us at any given time...my grandmother had 6 children and LOTS of grandchildren. Add to that a host of other relatives and friends and we had a party!

Food was a BIG part of these celebrations. Lots of work and preparation started the night before...snapping beans, peeling potatoes and cleaning the collard greens were just some of the jobs that had to get done. This is where my love of food and entertaining was born.

The men were probably hanging out on the porch, talking about the latest Chrysler or Buick they wanted to buy...the music was pumping on the stereo (CD's hadn't been born yet)...and my brother Billy or my cousin Kevin played the DJ role...

Grandma Susie was always doing her thing in the baking department...Sweet Potato Pie, Lemon Pound Cake, and my favorite...Peach Cobbler.

As I prepare for my favorite holiday of the year, I can't help but to share these memories with you. I've shared these traditions with my family out here in Arizona and it helps me not to miss my east coast family so much.

Over the next few days I'll share recipes of some of my favorites...hopefully you can try them out and create some memories of your own.

This one is very close to my grandmother's recipe...I would give you hers but its all in my head! I cook by "touch and taste" as opposed to a recipe...

Big Mama's Peach Cobbler (Don't forget the vanilla ice cream! Daddy always did!)

Ingredients

1/4 c. butter
4 c. peeled & sliced peaches
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. plus 2/3 c. baking mix
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tbsp. brown sugar, firmly packed
2 tbsp. milk

Directions

In 1-quart shallow casserole, combine peaches, sugar, 1 tablespoon baking mix and cinnamon.

In medium bowl, mix remaining 2/3 cup baking mix with brown sugar. Cut in butter until mixture is size of small peas.

Stir in milk until moistened.

Drop by spoonfuls onto peaches.

Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted into crust comes out clean.

Let stand 5 minutes. 6 servings.

A few months ago I felt like I needed a little pick me up in the look of my business. Last October we launched a new website, revamped our logo design and we're even re-evaluating our brand (more on that soon!) for bigger and better service to our brides.

Designing Your Wedding Style: The Dress

Today I'd like to talk about your wedding gown! It is the single most emotionally charged purchase you will make. Why? Because it turns you into a princess...scratch that...a queen for your wedding day. When you put that dress on, everything changes.

Not only do you feel like a million bucks; like royalty; like the hottest diva there is...you also become the apple of every one's eye...a vision to behold...daddy's beautiful girl.

When the officiant asks your guests to stand to welcome you...the bride...into the ceremony room, all eyes will wander to you. ALL eyes! When that happens, don't you want to look your best? Don't you want your groom's eyes to water?

Yes...I know you do, But uh, no pressure, OK? Keep reading...

I've said all of the above because not only is it true...its the reason you should take your time and pick the dress that best suits you. Our wedding planners, when feasible, schedule a full day when shopping with our clients. We make a day of it, often starting with a late breakfast and ending with dinner that night. We like to make sure our brides enjoy the experience.

When trying to choose "the dress", don't set your sights on one or two dresses you've fallen in love with in bridal magazines or online. By all means, try them on...but make sure you try on lots of dresses and take care to learn about the different types of wedding gowns...the basic silhouettes...and which ones compliment your body type.

Also pay close attention to necklines, sleeves, waistlines and trains. Think about where your festivities will take place and how your dress might impact your movement in your chosen venue.

If you are planning on dancing til the wee hours, you may not want to choose a dress that has lots of bead work or one that is made of a heavier material. My dress had lots of bead work...it was quite heavy. Needless to say, I was dying to get out of it after lots of dancing and being on my feet. By 10pm, I was done, but the party continued until 1am.

Here are some shopping tips to take into consideration. Courtesy of Mindy Weiss and The Wedding Book:

~Bring pictures of dresses you like and ones you don't like. If you like the neckline of one gown and the draped back of another, point out exactly what you so and don't like to the sales associate.

~Be sure to wear underwear you won't be embarrassed to be seen in. Trying on wedding dresses is not a solo operation, so this isn't the day to wear a peekaboo thong.

~If you're shopping a sample sale or the Filene's Basement bridal gown sale, wear a body stocking, unitard, or swimsuit under your clothing so you can change in the aisle if necessary.

~Bring a camera. Not every salon will allow you to take photos, but if possible, get a photo of yourself in the dress you're buying, not only for showing your mother (if she's not with you) but also for your florist, cake maker, and other vendors trying to assess the style of your wedding. Remember, the dress sets the tone for the wedding. A photo will also help you when shopping for accessories, though a fabric swatch is important too.

Providing your guests with a program at your ceremony is a great way to personalize your wedding. It also provides a great opportunity to share your and your fiance's cultures, family traditions or any other special things about you as a couple.

Perhaps you are having your ceremony at the church where you were christened or baptised as a child? Or maybe it's the same church where your parents took their vows.

If you are getting married in a location that has rich history attached to it, tell your guests about it in your program.

If you and your fiance are combining religious rituals into your ceremony, providing the meaning behind each of them in your program will allow your guests to share in the spiritual aspects of your ceremony.

What's Your Wedding Style and how do you define it?

Weddings surround my life everyday. Whether it's checking out the latest eye candy and some of my favorite photographers' websites...reading some of my favorite wedding planner blogs or producing a wedding myself...I see it all!

I have always encouraged my clients to stay true to themselves when planning the look and feel of their wedding. While they may see an element or style in a photo album or in a magazine that they feel they MUST replicate at their wedding or reception, it's important to always include elements that are personal to them. Ones that make them feel happy and at ease because ultimately...the party is a celebration of the two of them...not of a bride and groom they saw in some magazine.

I've collected a lot of books over the years. It's one of the common interests I share with my husband. I guess you could call us bookworms! You should see our library!

Lately, I've purchased many books to help inspire me for the weddings I produce. Most of them are geared towards weddings and other social events but I also love to browse books about nature, art and interior design. The HGTV network is also a favorite place of inspiration for me so you'll find me glued to the tube when I'm not working a wedding on the weekends.

Recently, I've been snuggled up on the couch, spending time with my books and I wanted to share one of my favorites with you. Lifestyle guru, Susie Coelho published a book called "Style Your Dream Wedding". There's a gang of amazing, full color pictures and tons of creative suggestions to help you create a wedding that is totally YOU!

But what I LOVE the most about this book is that it helps you (there's a quiz!) identify your style...classic, beach, contemporary, garden, countryside, fanciful or exotic.

Savvy Tip of the Week: Being the Perfect Wedding Guest

Emily Post is the first name that comes to mind when you hear the word etiquette. Today I would like to share what she has to say to all you wedding guests out there.

Tips on Being the Perfect Guest

1. RSVP. Immediately.
RSVP is French for “please respond” (répondez s’il vous plaît). Your most important obligation as a guest is to respond to the invitation immediately, especially if you are unable to attend. At the very least, it allows your host and hostess enough time to give an accurate count to the caterer. There is usually a card to return with your reply. If not, you may write a formal reply or a note indicating your intention.

2. Respect your invitation.
Do not ask your host or hostess if you can bring a date or your children. The invitation will be addressed to the people invited. If you may bring a guest, your invitation will read “Mr. John Phelps and guest.” If your children are invited, they will either receive their own personal invitations or their names will be listed under yours on the envelope. This is not the time to question your host’s decision, to argue or to beg for an exception. And, please, do not add their names to a reply card or show up with them anyway!

3. Send a gift.
If you are invited to the ceremony and/or reception, you should send a gift, whether you are attending or not. Generally, gifts are sent to the bride in advance of the wedding. In some localities, gifts are brought to the reception and placed on a special table. If you hear from family that the couple would prefer a charitable donation—as in the case of an older couple or an encore wedding —please respect their wishes. If you receive an announcement after the wedding has taken place, you may send a gift if you wish, but you have no obligation to do so. It is nice to acknowledge the announcement with a card or a note expressing your best wishes.

4. Be on your BEST behavior.
Be on time, wear appropriate clothing and be respectful during the marriage ceremony. Pay your respects to the hosts, the wedding party and other guests at the reception. And remember.

I'm an avid cook and confessed foodie! I admit it...I LOVE food! I'm always looking to try new and exciting dishes...especially Italian!...and you can find me watching and mimicking lots of the stars on The Food Network every Saturday. It's nothing for me to see a recipe on "Every Day Italian" with Giada and then run to the store to buy all of the ingredients to make what ever dish she just made. Happens all the time!

Designing Your Wedding Style: The Wedding Date & The Venue

You've said "Yes" and you've told your parents...

You have a basic plan for what you're going to spend and how you're going to spend it...

Now what?

It's time to pick the perfect date and the perfect venue to host your nuptials. For some of you, the date will be easy. There's that one special date that symbolizes your love for each other perfectly. First date...first kiss or perhaps a year from the day he asked!

Or there's a date that is more convenient for both of you and your families because of scheduling or season. Families with lots of children may want to stick to a date during a school break. If you want a spring or summer wedding, your geographical location will dictate the best date. Whatever decision you make, try to stay flexible and have a few other alternative dates to choose from. This ensures that those family members close to you can attend your wedding. Having a few dates in mind will also help you when choosing your venue.

Which brings me to the next part of this post...

Hotel or Event Hall?
If you opt for a hotel or event hall, many of the resources you need will more than likely be at your fingertips. These types of venues are in business to host events like weddings and will have all or most of the equipment, food choices and vendor referrals you may need. The other good thing about hosting your ceremony and reception in a full service venue is that it saves you the cost of transportation. There is no need to hire a limo or car service to move you and your guests from one spot to another.

In some cases it will also save you money on your other vendor fees. Florists sometime charge extra to move flowers from one location to another. Photographers will sometimes charge you based on having to shoot in more than one location. And finally, if you opt to have your celebration in one location, there's really no need for a separate reception card when ordering your invitations. You can just include "Reception immediately following" at the bottom of your invite!

Park or Mom and Dad's backyard?
This option is going to take a bit more planning. Why? Because you have to source everything! Tables, chairs, linens, heaters, umbrellas (ella, ella...). Seriously though, one of my first BIG weddings was a 300 guest tent affair on the brides parents' estate. It was a week long production that required lots of rentals and lots of hired staff. Katie and I couldn't do it alone.

The ceremony was in the front yard area and the reception in the back. Valet company, portable bathrooms (they were GORGEOUS, by the way...no port-a-pottys here!) caterer, tent, tables and chairs for ceremony, cocktail hour and reception, electricity, coolers (it was in the middle of June!)...the list goes on. And THEN all of those vendors, equipment deliveries and setups needed to be organized and timed just right for 300 guests!

I know...you're thinking, "we can do this...we have backyard barbeque's all the time!" Not the same thing. At backyard barbeque's there are plenty of helpers around to do all the work. Do you honestly want to have your guests help you set tables, decorate and then bus tables afterwards? I didn't think so. I know I'm over simplifying but you get the picture. There are many moving parts to a production like this no matter what the size. Do yourself a favor and hire a wedding planner or at least consult with one on how to put it all together. We'll be happy to hear from you and you'll be so happy you did!

Michelle sent me a few samples from her yumminess brand a few weeks ago and I have to say the products are top notch, first rate materials! I fell in love instantly! The colors are vibrant, chic and trendy...there are many colors to choose from and the best part? You assemble them yourself! This makes them very affordable and fun!

In 2008, mmm… paper launched its new do-it-yourself brand of couture wedding invites, yumminess! This brand is all about couples succeeding in the assembly of their own invites.

~What makes your business unique when compared to others in this category?
We’ve seen too many wedding couples attempt to make invites and become flustered with all of the cutting, gluing, and printing required with most do-it-yourself wedding invites. Yumminess is pre-planned, pre-cut, and pre-sized. We provide everything you’ll need to be successful including glue, fasteners, ties, and assembly instructions. We also offer to do the printing for you. We think your invites should be gorgeous - regardless of who assembles them.

~Where do you draw inspiration for your creations, products, or services?
I used to work in the fashion industry… so I look at paper like fashion designers look at fabric. Papers are luscious lovely textiles! I try to think like an apparel designer when constructing a gown… how can I meld these textures and patterns into something gorgeous?

~What has been your most favorite moment as a business owner?
I love the balance between creativity and strategy. Part of my day is playing with paper and part of my day is molding the business into a leader in the stationery industry.

~What product or service has been your best selling item? Why do you think that is?
For wedding invites, it’s all about color palettes. For 2009 colors are bright and vibrant: reds and oranges, chartreuse and magenta. Flourishes and swirls are also very popular right now.

~How do you set yourself apart with regard to your customer service?
We have an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars on our customer service. (We survey all our clients to determine their level of satisfaction with us.) Clients love that we are available… and we are there to make sure they are getting what they want. It’s not about us, it’s about the client.

~If you could offer one piece of advice to brides, what would that be?
Go with your gut. If you love it, do it. If you’re not in love with it, move on. There is so much information out there! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Ultimately, if it feels good, chances are you’ll be happy with the result.

Savvy Tip of the Week: Flowers Do Double Duty

Your floral budget doesn't have to be higher than the national debt!

If your ceremony is in one location and the reception is in another, the floral arrangements that you've chosen as your centerpieces can do double duty by being used to also decorate the ceremony aisle.

Some florists will offer to transport and setup the flowers at your reception after the ceremony is over. If you've planned it right, there is usually enough time in between the end of your ceremony and the start of your reception. You can save money and time by using the arrangements in both places. Not to mention the continuity of the overall look and feel of your entire wedding day!

Here is a perfect example of flowers doing double duty. This wedding was featured on Brooklyn Bride back in May 2008.

Their labor of love, Southern Weddings Magazine has finally hit the newsstands and I am very excited and thrilled for them!

Designing Your Wedding Style: Budget

Before the dress...before the flowers...and before the big day, you have to figure out what it all will cost. Some of you may say, "Daddy says the sky is the limit", or he may say, "Sweetheart, you have $30,000 to spend and that's IT!" Wherever your wedding money comes from, it still isn't a BUDGET until you know how the dollars will be allocated.

Creating your budget is the single most important step in planning your wedding. It will dictate what vendors you choose, the venue you'll host your wedding in AND countless other elements that will make your day special. Having a clear plan and knowing where the money is coming from and going to, is the best way to move forward. An open and honest conversation with everyone about expectations is the key to an informed and fun planning process.

Our team uses a very simple excel spreadsheet to create an initial budget for our couples. It shows them the average breakdown by category and subcategory if applicable. It gives them a visual picture of what amounts they'll spend on key wedding elements. Most couples have no idea what or how much to spend on what so the budget exercise really opens their eyes to what to expect when they meet with other vendors.

Here's a copy of a wedding budget we did recently and the actual costs incurred by our clients.

This exercise is one of the very FIRST meeting topics we cover when working with our couples. We encourage them to share it with their parents and anyone else that is contributing financially. Having everyone on the same financial page is one of the keys to a wonderful wedding planning experience!

My Personal Theme for 2009

My personal and professional theme for 2009 is "Discover Your Brilliance". It's on my wall in my office, on my desktop...everywhere I roam. I am reading a wonderful book by Simon T. Bailey called "Release Your Brilliance" and one of the first steps in doing so is Self Evaluation.

I've done this before...when I divorced from my first husband. I went through a transformation that I will never forget. It was a physically and emotionally wrenching period in my life...in Phoenix...alone, no family, and no friends. I worked constantly and cried daily. After I reconnected with my source, I was renewed, felt confident and was at my best.

Today, although I know where my source is, I've lost that wonderful feeling despite the fact that I am in a VERY happy marriage, very successful in my career and feeling at peace with God. My story is not new but it is one that is a re-source for me!

In 2009 I will draw on that story and use it as a roadmap for this new journey.

I'm taking stock, throwing out the old...dusting off the not so old and making improvements. And finally, I am finding some new and exciting things to enhance my life and my business.

I can't WAIT!

New Year's Eve Safety Tips from the noo New Year's Website:

New Years Eve is a huge night for everyone, which means crowds will be swarming toward all the metropolitan hubs around the world. People feed off eachothers' excitement, and sometimes things can get out of hand if safety precautions are not taken. Everyone wants to have an unforgettable night (in a good way!). By simply using some common sense, we can keep it that way. Ring in the New Year safely!

Designate a Driver
If you are going to be driving New Years Eve, don't drink and drive. If you have a friend who does not prefer to drink, make sure they take the wheel. You might even be on the water this New Years Eve. The person in charge of navigating the boat needs to be cautious, and this still applies to them! It is important to be safe on the water as well, so drink sensibly.

Don't forget about your pets
They are just as much a part of the family as everyone else. If you are using fireworks, anything with loud noises, or fire, be sure that pets are kept at a distance as well as children. None of these are a good mix. Candles are also a potential hazard.

Be Alert
Be aware of your surroundings and how others are acting. Stay away from those who are out of control and might cause harm. Taking preventive measures is key. If someone is really intoxicated, prevent them from trying to drive or leaving with someone they do not know. It's important to keep an eye out for each other.

Don't Drive
If you don't have to go behind the wheel, avoid it. More people will be driving under the influence on this particular night, so avoid a potentially dangerous accident by staying off the road. Otherwise, be alert and drive defensively. Most importantly, wear your seatbelt! Also, using public transportation is a wise option. If taking a cab is too expensive, crashing at a friend's place nearby is a convenient solution.

Stick Together
This way we can look out for our friends and family. Going out to parties and nightclubs means a fast-paced, crazy night; so be sure to travel in groups. Having a safety net around you in this environment, especially for women, is imperative.

Monitor your Alcohol Intake
A majority of people will be drinking on New Years Eve, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Drinking too much alcohol can have lethal affects. Be responsible.

The First Five Things To Do Now That He Has Popped the Question

#1 - If he's the one, then say "Yes", girl! And then enjoy the moment.

I can't emphasis this enough! So many brides get caught up in the planning right away and miss the moment. Talk about how wonderful life will be together and what your desires are for the future. Cherish this time together by finding your individual and common goals as a couple. Love each other, go on dates and savor the moment. Make a vow to always remember that despite the ups and downs of wedding planning, the reason you are getting married is more important than any decision about colors, flowers or cake!

#2 - Tell your parents

You should tell your parents you're getting married before anyone else. Both of you should be there and be sure it's in person - they'll have a chance to see your happiness up close, look at the rock, and start talking about the wedding. Traditionally the bride's parents know before the groom's do, but any order is really fine. Then share the news with a few close friends - the ones who are likely candidates for maid/matron of honor and best man, or definite attendants in some capacity.

#3 - Purchase a small notebook or journal if you don't already have one

This will be a time of ten thousand moments you won't want to forget, as well as some frustrating times that you'll need to vent about, and not necessarily to your fiance. The journal you keep while planning your wedding will not only help you through this time, but it will be something you cherish for the rest of your life.

#4 - Announce Your Engagement

Tell everyone the good news! There are many ways of doing this, and no way is more correct or better than another. Consider:

-Announcing your engagement in print publications

-Mailing announcements to your family and friends

-Creating a wedding website

#5 - Choose a Few Wedding Dates

Setting your wedding date will be one of the most important decisions you will make as you plan your wedding. Not only will it be the first question everyone will ask you, but you'd be surprised how difficult it will be to make any progress on planning your wedding without knowing the date. Choosing a few dates is smart because if you lock in on one date, other choices you have to make may be limited.

I don't want to overwhelm you...there's SO much to think about and right now you should just enjoy the moment. Next Monday, I'll share with you, tips on how to create a sensible budget and how to stick to it in the start of my "Define and Design Your Wedding Style" series. Be sure to tune in!

Best Dang Cornbread Dressing Recipe EVER!

Herbed Southern Cornbread Dressing

2 cups chopped celery
2 cups chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green or red bell pepper
2 tablespoons dried sage, crushed
1 tablespoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted (butter is better!)
12 cups crumbled cornbread (double the Albers recipe)
1 8-ounce package herb-seasoned stuffing mix
1 cup cooked, finely chopped giblets
2 1/2 to 3 quarts chicken or turkey broth
Salt and peppers to taste

In large saucepan or Dutch oven, cook and stir celery, onion. green pepper with sage, poultry seasoning and thyme in melted butter until tender, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Combine crumbled cornbread and stuffing mix in large mixing bowl. Stir in vegetable mixture, giblets and chicken broth until mixed well. (Additional broth may be needed.) Season the cornbread mixture with salt and pepper. Pour dressing in large baking pan. Bake at 400 degrees until dressing is lightly brown and set, about 30 to 40 minutes.

Yields about 18 servings

Oh my goodness!! Where do I START? First...

It's official! The new Sacred Moment Weddings website is LIVE!! After months of stops and starts; additions and deletions; emails lost in cyberspace and all the other aches and pains that comes with growth, we have launched our BIG GIRL website!

When I started my business 3 1/2 years ago, I learned all I could about html, javascript (never really quite mastered THAT one!), RGB, Hexidecimal codes and more so that I could save money and maintain control of my website.

It worked well for awhile, but then I took the wrong turn down a dark path and ended up with something that just didn't work...

So I bit the bullet and decided to hire a multi-talented, design QUEEN named Maddie who makes everything better in pink, and my new site was born! Thanks Maddie!

Secondly...

Maddie has also created a matching blog for us! We aren't quite done with it yet and its housed with a new provider. Also, I'm still learning how to use it :) So until then, look for news, updates and all the happenings at our special place in the world here on my Blogger site.

Throwing the Bouquet?

This custom has its roots in England. It was believed that the bride could pass along good fortune to others by tossing her bouquet to the single women at the wedding. Tradition says that the single woman who catches the bouquet is the one who will marry next.

Um...nice tradition but I don’t “encourage” this practice with my brides. I do suggest a nice alternative. Presenting a smaller version of the bride’s bouquet to a cherished friend is much more meaningful. Why do I do this? More times than not I’ve seen the bouquet ripped into a million pieces with women sprawled all over the floor with unmentionables showing!

Not a pretty sight!

Please Everyone...Do What You Can To Get Out The Vote!

A few weeks ago a couple of friends sent me e-mails asking: Is it true that a voter could be turned away from the polls for wearing a campaign T-shirts or buttons?

My initial reaction was, this is just silly stuff.

Then, I got to thinking, maybe what you wear could be interpreted as campaigning for a particular candidate and could cause a voter problems on election day. I know from covering past elections, anything that could be misconstrued as electioneering is not allowed in the polling places.

So, just to answer my friends' concerns, I did some checking and found out, it is true. In certain states you can be turned away from the polls if you're wearing something that shows support for a particular candidate or a ballot issue.

And as fate would have it, I was assigned to do stories on how to be best prepared to make your vote count.

What I found out was somewhat disappointing, albeit, not surprising. There's lots of bad information, dumb rumors, and outright deceptive material going around to mess up the voting process.

What's worse, some of the underhanded tactics to scare or intimidate voters will probably work to disenfranchise some people especially first time voters, minorities or the elderly.

That ought to make all the rest of us mad. Mad enough to make sure we share what we know about the process with our friends. Mad enough to talk to folks who may be first time voters and make sure they've got all their information together. Mad enough to help a senior citizen to the polls. Mad enough to make certain the people who would try to mess up this election don't succeed.

As a nation, America regularly answers the call from developing countries asking us to monitor their elections to make certain this democratic process of voting is fair and above reproach.

The least we can do for ourselves is --politics aside if you can-- help someone else exercise a right that many people all over the world wish they had.

Savvy Tip of the Week: Wedding Toasts

The Wedding Toast...Sounds like a great title for a movie, don't you think?

The wedding toast is the part of the reception that many wedding planners tend to hold their breath. Especially when it involves wedding guests who have indulged themselves a bit too much. This is one area where I sometimes get to flex my muscles but more often than not, I just signal the DJ to cut the mike as if there was a malfunction or something. :)

I ask all my clients up front, for information on who may need the plug pulled when it comes to toasting time. It eliminates embarrassing moments and allows me to prepare ahead of time. I have heard many stories of crying brides and angry grooms mixed with hurt feelings that could have easily been avoided if a few simple guidelines had been followed.

First, let's define what a toast really is:

a. The act of raising a glass and drinking in honor of or to the health of a person or thing.

b. A proposal to drink to someone or something or a speech given before the taking of such a drink.

c. The one honored by a toast.

Wedding toasts are certainly much easier to prepare than a wedding speech is. Toasts are much shorter and usually a lot less serious than the speeches. Traditionally a toast was made as a sign of communal agreement. It has since become a very important part of the wedding party and is a part of the wedding that often gets remembered for years to come.

A wedding toast usually starts off with a little story or a quote to set the scene. Then the person toasting will proceed to make the toast toward the end. Make sure that your introduction is appropriate and that it is appropriate to the person(s) you are toasting. If you're not good at writing, there are many prewritten wedding toasts available that you can either use or modify. One of the best guides for wedding toasts are Wedding Toasts made easy by Tom Haibeck. This book has since become the manual for many wedding toasts and speeches and was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Here are the 9 essential tips for delivering a great wedding toast:

1. Wedding toasts are not wedding speeches. Keep your toast short and to the point, usually no more than one to two minutes.

2. When you're ready to make your toast, be sure to stand up so people can see you. It's customary to tap on your glass with a spoon to get everybody's attention. The only person(s) who remain seated are the one's who are being toasted.

3. Before toasting, give the guests time to refill their glasses.

4. Hold your glass in your right hand when proposing the toast and raise the glass toward the person you are toasting when you are finished.

5. After a toast, it is customary for everyone to clink glasses before sipping. People will follow your lead - show them when to clink their glasses and when to drink.

6. Keep the toast clean and appropriate for the audience. Humor is good, humiliation is not. Keep in mind that there are usually older people (grandparent's) and children present.

7. Speak slowly and clearly and make sure that everyone can hear you.

8. As your making your toast, look around the room at the guests. As you finish up, be sure to make eye contact with the bride and groom, or the person you are presenting the toast too.

9. Practice your toast before the wedding. Make sure you know what you are going to say and if need be, you can write it down and keep it with you, just in case you get stuck.

Wedding toasts are part of the celebration. Try and keep it upbeat. Don't get too emotional and give people something to be cheerful about.
